Mélissa Laveaux
Dying Is A Wild Night
No Format! / Naïve
Mélissa Laveaux's album takes its title from a poem by Emily Dickinson and the results are staggering.
"Postman" is dense and throbbing, Laveaux emoting against an electronic backdrop. "Pretty Girls" is a punchy number with a vocal that's just gorgeous and proves the singer's massive talent. "Generous Bones" is a tense, thrilling song that recalls The Knife's early, poppier stuff. Laveaux has her own voice though. "Piebwa" is a variation on Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" sung in Creole. It's a very subtle
echo melodically and Laveaux carries it well. It's a brilliant album.
