Forgotten Birds are Judy Willms and Jan Gazarra, a duo from Hamburg, and their musical debut is this digital single, holding a cover song backed with a self-penned
piece.
"Fools Rush In" is a cover of the classic hit written (in 1940) by Johnny Mercer (singer, songwriter, co-founder of Capitol Records) and Rube Bloom (vocalist, pianist,
band leader, etc.) - a song which is one of Forgotten Birds' all time favourites. It has been recorded many a time over the years, by artists such as: Glenn Miller, Doris
Day, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Etta James, Stan Getz, and Cliff Richard, as well as Bow Wow Wow, Spiritualized (merged into their 1997 song "Ladies
and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space"), The Morning Benders, She & Him (a.k.a. Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), and many more. So, now are Forgotten Birds attached to
this rather long list.
What about their interpretation of this classic? Is touching a classic risky business? A classic done by so many over a lifespan of years. Well, it's hard to fail with
a song like this. Jan and Judy's duet is a classy, comforting, smoothly textured and neatly balanced ballad. It's an overall pleasant song, soberly and stylishly done.
Their own song "Suzie" fits "Fools..." quite well. Forgotten Birds' music over floats/flies slowly over dizzy, atmospheric landscapes. It's almost like listening to them
feels like touching velvet. It's possible that a full album will be a bit too much of this kind of wonderful, but then again it's really nice to lay back to be caressed
by music.
Their album Sahara is due out October 4th. "Fools Rush In" will be on it, "Suzie" will not.
