Flight of the Conchords
Flight of the Conchords
Sub Pop / Tuba!
I guess you'll have to see the TV show to get this one: Flight of the Conchords is a HBO TV show, but it's also a folk-pop duo, a novelty band of two,
Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, both guitars and vocals. The same twosome that's in the TV series. Well, I haven't seen it, but the plot says: "Flight of
the Conchords follows the trials and tribulations of a two man (Bret and Jemaine), digi-folk band (F.o.t.C.) from New Zealand as they try to make a name for
themselves in their adopted home of New York City. So far they've managed to find a manager (whose "other" job is at the New Zealand Consulate), one fan (a
married obsessive) and one friend (who owns the local pawn shop) -- but not much else."
The series is probably funny, good, and of HBO quality. I'm looking forward to seeing it. But, I've got some problems handling this record. The album, which
holds 15 songs, is said to "pay homage to Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments". Well, the tongue-in-cheek
and novelty aspect, I'm just not up for it right now. That said, by listening to the song "Bowie" I understand the boys are truly talented, both as comedians
and musicians. Besides that I prefer to spend my time listening to real music.
