Lily Allen
Smile
Regal/Parlophone/EMI
If you haven't heard of Lily Allen yet, then you've not been paying a bit of goddamned attention. At least that's the way I felt when I saw the video for this song a few days ago.
The music is somewhat a mixture of British garage/2-step and American teenpop. It's good. And the non-American aspect of it makes Lily Allen's lyrics actually meaningful instead of the product of being a spoiled brat. Yet they can communicate to a youthful crowd. Also, being non-American, Lily actually looks nice, instead of fucking anorexic like our pop-stars on this side of atlantic, fat-ass Britney Spears not-included.
Smile is currently no. 1 on the U.K. charts. If this song doesn't get to you, you need to move to Asheville and pretend punk didn't die and that you know what Anarchy means.
Pulp
Weeds (John Peel Session 2001)
Island Records
Unlike Phantom Planet, there is absolutely noone who can deny the awesomeness of Pulp. Look for this particular John Peel session on Soulseek. It will surely bring back a good memory or two. "We'd like to get you out of your mind/for a little time/for a little time".
ISAN
Yttrium
Morr Music
I've noticed that Morr Music are becoming more and more ignored by the major players of internet music media. This bothers me to no end, because as the big guys like pitchfork are forgetting about them, Morr music just keeps growing and getting better. "Yttrium" is the epitome of original. So much so that it's almost unsettling upon first listen. That's not to say there isn't precedent for this sound, on the contrary, I hear plenty of influences, including ambient Aphex Twin and Casino Vs. Japan.
This is well crafted electronic music that isn't getting its due in the media. Give it a listen. Couldn't find an MP3 of this particular song but it's on Soulseek.
